The technology has the potential to increase ethanol production by 50%, without expanding the planted area, through the conversion of straw and bagasse.
In addition, cellulosic (or second-generation) ethanol is a clean fuel – its greenhouse gas emissions are up to 90% lower than those produced by fossil fuels.
CTC develops 2G ethanol from sugarcane in its industrial biotechnology laboratories, pilot plants (in Piracicaba/SP) and demonstration plants (in São Manuel/SP, attached to the São Manoel plant).
